Is your software compatible with Mac OS X Leopard?

March 18, 2008. Leopard-related revisions have been completed. Currently known issues are specific to particular systems and are being addressed. I bought your software, when will I receive it or how do I download it?

All software can be freely downloaded by just clicking the product icon or large font linked product title. That's it.

Can I try the software before I buy it?

Yes, of course. As above, just click the product icon or title to download. See below for the shareware policy.

How can I tell what version I'm using or downloading?

If you've already downloaded it, you can look at the Finder info or the about box, etc. You could also check VersionTracker or MacUpdate. The most recent version will always be the one linked on these pages.

Where's the manual?

WBC does our best to provide detailed instructions for our products. If no documentation file is provided in a given distribution, usually there will be an info screen within the application. Remember, if all else fails, read the manual!

Do you provide support by e-mail?

I'm happy to provide e-mail support also whenever possible. Please provide accurate information, and logs when appropriate. Many products have a menu option to copy logs to the clip board. Some have a debug mode in the Help menu which provides more log details and saves to Console log.

How long does it take to get an answer from support?

Believe it or not, this isn't my full time job. If it were, watch out, I'd have to rob you to eat. Anyway, I answer support e-mails as soon as I can, often the same day. However when things get nuts, it might take a while. Some messages do get spam filtered – if you never get a response try sending again from a different e-mail address.

Is there a Windows version of... ?

With a couple of exceptions, our software is for Mac OS X. We have no plans to develop or port for Windows. If you are a Windows developer who wants to port our software, feel free to contact us. You'll make millions! HomeBuyDB has been released for Windows beginning with verison 1.1. There is a Windows version of PocketCites, but support for it is no longer available. If you are looking for a Windows product like iDupe, try Dupe Eliminator for iTunes.

I mistakenly paid for your software but I'm a Windows user and I didn't know it was Mac only. Can I get a refund?

Refunds will not be issued for this reason because the platform is clearly specified and because handling these requests is time consuming. Please feel free to give the product to a friend who has a Mac.

At the bottom of most pages and on this FAQ it says that WBC software is for Mac OS X unless specified otherwise. Directly under each buy button it states the platform, which is usually Mac only, with the corresponding logo. The top of this FAQ shows a Leopard compatibility chart. The downloads are all .dmg format which is a Mac archive format. All over this site are other indications that WBC is a Mac-oriented developer.

Windows users, please don't assume because something is called "software" that it will run on your proprietary operating system. Please always check system requirements. Mac users are used to being able to try software before they buy it!

WBC software can be kept low-priced because there is no overhead managing licenses and payments. WBC software is released under an honor system (see below). I do not want to spend time generating, issuing, and policing registration codes, so why should I want to spend time issuing refunds to Windows users who buy before they even read the product description?

What is the difference between freeware, donationware, and shareware?

What are these nebulous things? Freeware is software that is just put out there with absolutely no expectation of being compensated. Any donations for freeware are treated like gifts, with gratitude. Donationware is put out in the spirit that if you use it regularly, you should make a donation, but it is not required. I just may sneer at you after a while. Shareware is released with the understanding that if you continue to use it, you will pay the asking fee. You are in fact buying the product, I'm just not policing you.

Why don't you use serial numbers for shareware?

Wooden Brain Concepts believes in the spirit and princple of shareware. Digital media, including software, has negligible manufacturing costs at the margins. That is, once it is produced, it makes no difference whether there are 1 or 1 billion copies out there. Aside from the negligible costs of bandwidth, web hosting, etc., and factoring some portion of the equipment used for development, the value of a software product is almost entirely in time. I would like to be compensated for my time. I do not want to spend more of my time doing things like monitoring license codes and chasing around pirates and so forth.

Therefore, with the exception of PocketCites, all of our software is freeware, donationware, or unrestricted shareware. This means there are no serial numbers on our shareware.

How do I make the nag reminders go away on some products?

As explained above, payment is required if the product is shareware. Once you have paid you can click a box that says "I Paid" to make the nags go away. This should be located either on the info or the settings tab for paned applications. For OmniGrowl, it is up front on the General tab.

Why didn't you thank me for my payment or donation?

Ok, I'm thanking you now! Thank you for your support. If you pay or donate via Kagi, you should get a confirmation from Kagi that has a thank you message. If you pay or donate via PayPal, you will just get a generic confirmation of payment received message. If our own automatic system works, you should also get another thank you message from Wooden Brain Concepts directly, but an occasional payment might fall through the filter cracks or get spam blocked, etc.

I am a developer. Can I use use your shareware in trade for a licensed copy of my software?

Gladly! I am always grateful for licensed copies of your software in lieu of payment for mine. Now that's what I call exchange!

MacPlease note that unless specified otherwise, all WBC software is for Mac OS X.
